Step by step

1. Unplug and sort everything

Pull every cable out, decide what you actually use, and toss or store the rest. Label the plug ends with tape so you know which is which.

2. Get the power strip off the floor

Mount or set your power strip in a tray under the desk. Most of the tangle comes from cables running down to an outlet on the floor.

3. Bundle cables that travel together

Group cords running the same way (monitor, laptop, lamp) and strap them every 30 cm or so.

4. Keep charging cables within reach

Clip the ends of phone and earbud cables to the desk edge so they don't fall behind it.

Common questions

What's the cheapest way to hide desk cables?

Reusable hook-and-loop ties and a few adhesive clips cost very little and handle most of the clutter. Add an under-desk tray if your power strip sits on the floor.

Can I manage cables on a standing desk?

Yes. Leave some slack in a vertical cable sleeve or spine so cords can move when the desk rises, and mount the power strip to the desk itself.
